If you rely on Social Security disability benefits programs such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), the year ahead will offer a somewhat minimal amount of relief financially.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) issued its cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2025 earlier today. This coming year, the COLA will increase by 2.5 percent. The average increase over the past decade, according to the SSA, has hovered around 2.6 percent. The highest adjustment in recent years, an increase of 8.7 percent, went into effect in 2023.
2025 SSI Payout
For an individual SSI recipient, this shift will result in a slightly larger payout, of about $24 more per month, compared with 2024. The maximum monthly federal SSI payout in 2024 is $943 for an individual and will go up to a maximum of $967 per month for 2025. For couples, the maximum payout will be $1,450 a month, up from $1,415 in 2024. These changes will become effective on December 31, 2024.
2025 SSDI Payout
Recipients of SSDI benefits will likewise experience a small increase, about $40, in monthly benefits. With the latest cost-of-living adjustment, individuals receiving SSDI will see their average monthly benefits rise to an estimated $1,576 per month, up from $1,537 in 2024.
